Finnish as a second language instruction in early childhood education and pre-primary education

Finnish as a second language (S2) is goal-oriented and regular instruction of the Finnish language that is provided to multilingual children. The instruction is based on inclusion, functionality and play. Images, drawing, expressions and gestures and, if necessary, baby sign language are used to support speech and language development. S2 instruction is part of the basic function of early childhood education, the starting point and basis of which are based on pedagogical planning and implementation in daily activities. Children learn Finnish also by taking part in language workshops and individual, pair and small group activities.

A Finnish as a second language (S2) plan is drawn up for all children whose one or both guardians speak a language other than Finnish. It is part of the early childhood education teacher’s duties to prepare the plan. The S2 plan is part of the child’s early childhood education plan drawn up in Wilma. The early childhood education of the city of Lappeenranta’s Finnish as a second language (S2) curriculum is utilised in the preparation of the S2 plan.

Instructions

Every multilingual child, whose Finnish language skills are not sufficient in different areas of the language, attends Finnish as a second language instruction. Teachers in early childhood education and pre-primary education discuss and agree together with the parents on how to support, monitor and assess the child’s progress in learning Finnish. The early childhood education plan includes the child’s Finnish as a second language plan (S2 plan). Early childhood education teachers working with the group of children plan the teaching arrangements based on the goals set. The teacher discusses the progress made by the child with the parents.
