South Karelia Museum
The South Karelia Museum is located in former artillery storehouses built in the early 19th century of massive grey stone at the northern tip of the Lappeenranta Fortress. Unlike the neoclassical brick barracks in the area, these buildings are made of local limestone.
The museum’s collections are based on those of the Town Museum of Lappeenranta, Viipuri Town Museum and Käkisalmi Museum. Besides the current South Karelia, the museum is also responsible for preserving and presenting the history of the regions ceded to the Soviet Union. Besides exhibitions, the South Karelia Museum features guided tours, events and workshops.
The South Karelia Museum’s new permanent exhibition, "the Story of South Karelia", will be built in stages. The first of the new permanent exhibition sections to open include a restored scale model of Viipuri, the section on the life of Finnish Viipuri, and the Pusukioski or ‘Kissing Kiosk’. The exhibition will be completed by the end of 2023.
The South Karelia Museum has a museum shop on the premises where you can get unique products made based on the objects in the museum collections. The shop is open within the museum’s opening hours.
