ReGreeneration – Greening the Sammonlahti regional centre

A drawing of plants and people.

Adding greenery to residential areas

ReGreeneration aims to to explore how greening and renaturing solutions can be operationalised all over Europe by their implementation in 4 European leading cities: Paris, Bucharest, Barcelona and Alverca and their replication in Gent, Ljubljana, Rome, Lappeenranta and Segrate.

There will be a special focus on social housing districts, deprived, neglected or abandoned areas, derelict industrial sites, brownfields or other dysfunctional urban sites.

The role of Lappeenranta in the project is to specially monitor the solutions implemented by Bucharest during the project and replicate them in its own plans, which aim to revitalize the center of Sammonlahti and develop green areas.

The project began in January 2024 and lasts until 2027. It has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.

ReGreeneration in Sammonlahti

A development plan has previously been prepared for the Sammonlahti area in connection with a suburban development project, which takes into account the area's strengths and weaknesses as well as development opportunities. Based on these, the planning of the Sammonlahti regional center will now be taken forward.

Themes

The planning of the Sammonlahti Regional Center is guided by the following ReGreeneration themes:

1. A lively and pleasant Sammonlahti

We want to make Sammonlahti a place where everyday life is easy and where residents feel at home. The goal is a compact and diverse regional center where services, hobbies and nature are close by – and everyone can easily access them.

2. From residents to residents

We want to develop Sammonlahti together with you. We design shared spaces for the area that reflect the wishes, stories and everyday lives of the locals. The goal is to create places where people can have fun and meet.

3. A green and diverse environment

We want to develop green areas that not only beautify the environment, but also protect against the effects of climate change, support biodiversity and promote the well-being of residents.
