Food, consumption and circular economy

Thinking about everyday food and shopping choices can save money and natural resources. Below, you will find ways to more responsible and climate-friendly consumption.

What does circular economy mean?

The aim of circular economy is to keep goods and materials in use for as long as possible. This also makes it possible to reuse materials. Circular economy means

  • Material efficiency, such as minimizing the use of raw materials in all stages of production
  • Extending the life of products
  • Increasing recycling
  • Consuming services instead of products
  • Borrowing, sharing and repairing

The biowaste guide offers information about food waste and recycling

Food production, transportation, preparation and restaurant services cause about a quarter of all climate emissions.

Food that is produced unnecessarily burdens the environment. Food waste generated at home alone costs every Finn around 125 euros a year, according to the studies of the Natural Resources Institute Finland.

Dos and don'ts of biowaste sorting

Sort dry waste (mixed waste) and biowaste separately. Biowaste mixed in dry waste
affects the combustion process and
reduces the energy recovery from the
material.

Don't use a plastic bag as a bio waste bag. A paper bag is the best choice. You can get a free biowaste bag, for example, from
a flour bag, cereal box, or folded newspaper.
