Celine – The benefits of the energy system's digital transformation

A group of people.

Welcome to follow the utilisation of digital technologies in the energy sector!

The CELINE development project (Cross-sectorial integrated digital services Enabling energy Localized Innovation and community Empowerment) is based on the benefits of the energy system's digital transformation.

These include the connection between components related to energy use, direct access for end-users to the market, and renewable energy sources. However, the project also includes solving challenges, such as end-users' understanding of digital technologies, societal perspectives, effective community engagement, and data availability. All of this requires an appropriate operating environment that enables efficient data integration, including necessary data from external actors.

This development project funded by the European Union began in December 2024 and continues until November 2027.

Goals

CELINE is developing an innovative operating environment aimed at promoting the widespread adoption of digital technologies in the energy sector. CELINE's objectives are to:

  1. Support energy use plans for pilot sites
  2. Improve end-users' ability to understand energy use and make well-informed choices
  3. Assist end-users by enhancing their digital and energy literacy. CELINE tools and services will be tested at three pilot sites in different European regions, offering various climatic, geographical, and socio-economic conditions. The pilot sites are Valencia/Spain, Lappeenranta/Finland, and Alpe Cimbra/Italy.

Implementation

Lappeenranta's role in the project is to further develop existing virtual power plant functions and pilot the possibility of connecting city-managed social housing building blocks to the virtual power plant. A key part is also to encourage residents of pilot buildings to join the activities and help them share their experiences and ideas.

The CELINE project consortium consists of a total of 15 partners from Italy, Spain, Austria, France, Belgium, and Finland. Our closest project partner is LUT University. The project is led by the Italian Spindox Lab.
