Improving water clarity in Lake Pien-Saimaa

Lake and trees.

Welcome to follow the improvement of Lake Pien-Saimaa's water quality!

The goal of the development work of Lake Pien-Saimaa is to improve water quality and reduce external and internal loads.

In catchment areas, important measures include catchment area planning and block-specific measures to improve the growth condition of the land and to reduce external loads.

In water areas, on the other hand, fisheries management and planning for the restoration of predatory fish breeding areas are important measures. Other measures include communication, advicing, environmental education, monitoring and cooperation.

Results

The development work will improve water quality and change the structure of the fish population. The work will also increase biodiversity, environmental awareness and expertise, strengthen cooperation and networking, and improve the vitality of the countryside and the quality of life of residents.

The target groups and beneficiaries are residents and farmers, landowners, water area owners and municipalities of the Western Pien-Saimaa catchment area.

The development project started in June 2025 and will continue until the end of 2027. It is funded by the European Rural Development Fund for 2023–2027.
