From climate plans to actions in South Karelian municipalities

Birch tree.

Welcome to learn about the implementation of climate work!

The province of South Karelia was one of the first provinces in the Carbon Neutral Municipalities (HINKU) network. Many municipalities in South Karelia are also members of the HINKU network.

A road map and program for achieving carbon neutrality has been drawn up for the province. Municipalities have also prepared climate programs. Road maps and climate programs help the province and municipalities to understand the challenges of the effects of climate change and its effects in different operational sectors.

This development project began in January 2025 and continues until 2027. The City of Lappeenranta is the main implementor, and the City of Imatra participates as subcontractor. The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

Goals

The project's goal is to ensure the implementation of climate programs and road maps and to support companies in responsibility, energy and climate challenges.

The project is divided into work packages. Their purpose is to help the most critical sectors in the province. The goal of the project is also to strengthen operations in the future.

  • Work package 1: Coordinating the implementation of the programs, ensure the implementation of climate work, and communicate about the province's climate practices
  • Work package 2. Responding to companies' environmental challenges
  • Work package 3. Speeding up energy efficient solutions

The project's results are shared information, support for companies and municipalities, an energy efficiency report for the utilization of water heat, and a carbon footprint calculation for companies.
