Lappeenranta’s climate action showcased at international climate exhibition in Frankfurt

Lappeenranta is one of 13 European cities selected to take part in Too Hot – Scorching Cities, New Ideas, an exhibition on display at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) in Frankfurt. The exhibition highlights concrete solutions developed by cities to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Lappeenranta’s selection for the exhibition is a recognition of the city’s long-term efforts to promote climate neutrality and sustainable urban development.

Lappeenranta’s solutions showcased in the exhibition

The exhibition presents three examples of Lappeenranta’s climate and environmental work: the restoration of Lake Saimaa’s water system, Uniori’s environmental education for children and young people, and the city’s work to promote a carbon-neutral energy system.

The Pien-Saimaa section highlights Lappeenranta’s long-term efforts to improve the water quality. Uniori, in turn, showcases the role of children and young people in building a sustainable future. The exhibition also presents Lappeenranta’s carbon-neutral energy system and concrete solutions to energy and climate-related challenges.

According to Ilkka Räsänen, Director of Environment at the City of Lappeenranta, the exhibition is a valuable recognition of the city’s long-term climate work.

– It is great to see Lappeenranta’s climate action recognised internationally. The examples featured in the exhibition demonstrate well how climate action consists of a wide range of practical solutions. They also show how climate work is connected to many different areas of the city’s operations, from energy production and water system restoration to environmental education.

Cities play a key role in addressing climate change

Cities play a key role in both mitigating and adapting to climate change. Lappeenranta is actively working to reduce emissions and achieve its climate neutrality target. The city is developing its own operations in a more sustainable direction and promoting solutions in cooperation with residents, businesses, organisations and other partners.

The Too Hot – Scorching Cities, New Ideas exhibition has been curated by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, Germany’s largest architecture museum. The exhibition explores how cities across Europe are responding to the challenges posed by climate change. Lappeenranta was selected for the exhibition in recognition of its pioneering work and concrete climate solutions.

The exhibition is on display in Frankfurt from 20 June 2026 to 7 February 2027.
