Mayor Kimmo Jarva to resign

PUBLISHED 11/30/2023, 16:09

Mayor of Lappeenranta, Kimmo Jarva, has resigned from his post as mayor and his employment relationship will end on 20 May 2024.

At its budget meeting on 20 November 2023, the City Board decided to initiate the dismissal procedure of Mayor Kimmo Jarva and proposed to the council to set up an ad hoc committee to prepare the matter. The matter was brought before the City Board as a non-agenda item. The City Board’s motion was motivated by an apparent lack of confidence between the mayor and the council, according to an explanatory memorandum by the City Board.

Mayor Kimmo Jarva submitted his resignation to the City Board on the same day, 20 November 2023, during the weekly meeting of the Board.

The City Board noted the resignation and decided to propose to the City Council that it grant Kimmo Jarva’s resignation from the office of Mayor as of 21 May 2024.

The matter was discussed at an extraordinary meeting of the council on 27 November 2023.

The City Board also made clear that Mayor Kimmo Jarva would be relieved of his duties during his period of notice. The discharge of his official duties as mayor therefore ended on 21 November 2023.

For the time being, the mayor’s duties are being carried out by Deputy Mayor Tuomo Sallinen.

The office-holders below who will provide additional information will not comment on the reasons for the perceived lack of confidence.
