Persons within the scope of compulsory education have the right to suspend compulsory education for a specified period for a justified reason:

– Suspension due to long-term illness or injury that prevents the completion of compulsory education. Persons within the scope of compulsory education have the right to suspend compulsory education temporarily if the illness or disability preventing the completion of compulsory education is permanent in nature.

– Suspension for the duration of maternity, paternity or parental leave.

– Suspension for a temporary stay abroad of at least one month if a person within the scope of compulsory education participates in education corresponding to compulsory education abroad or if the person can otherwise be completing compulsory education during the stay abroad.

– Suspension due to other weighty reason related to life situation preventing the completion of compulsory education.

If the person within the scope of compulsory education is not a student of any education provider, the person’s municipality of residence will decide on the suspension. The suspension must be requested in writing.
