Established in 1973, the oldest artefacts in the Cavalry Museum collection date from the 18th century. It includes a host of uniforms, photographs, weapons and other materials from the time of the Finnish Dragoon Regiment in Lappeenranta in 1889–1901.

Lappeenranta was the centre for Finnish cavalry units in the 1920s and 1930s. Most of the artefacts in the collection are from the 20th century. The collection includes uniforms, badges and horse care and veterinary equipment, as well as about 5,000 photographs.

Part of the artefacts in the Cavalry Museum collection are depositions or long-term loans not in the ownership of the museum.

The museum is committed to recording the cultural heritage of cavalry in Lappeenranta within the framework of the Network for Collections Management and Contemporary Documentation or TAKO.
