Cold welcome to Lappeenranta

I thought I knew how ‘cold’ feels, however I was wrong. Since I’m staying in Lappeenranta I really know the meaning of ‘cold’.

I’m Thomas van der Werff from Haarlem, the Netherlands. I’m 19 years old and I’m a student in marketing communications at the Nova College. In am in my last year and got the opportunity to do an internship in Lappeenranta, Finland.

The reason I chose Lappeenranta is because I wanted to experience something totally different from the ‘big’ city life. I could not imagine what it’s like to live in a place where nature is bigger than buildings. Around the corner off my student apartment you have the Saimaa Lake, and I find it beautiful.

I’m going to do my internship at the City of Lappeenranta where I’ll be doing nice activities and attending events in its surroundings. I will share my experiences in a blog with photos and text in attention to make sure that more people notice Lappeenranta on the world map.

My first walk in -23 degrees, but hey! It was beautiful even if my hair froze.

First, my boss Mirka took me to this nice Finnish restaurant Wolkoff to taste some traditional Finnish food.
Really tasteful!

The way to the old city center. Nice to visit if you’ve seen enough of the beautiful nature.

Saturday night: Ice Hockey is as popular as soccer in Holland, so I had to attend a game of the local team SaiPa.
Fantastic atmosphere in the stadium and we won with 3-0!
