The South Karelia Museum

South Karelia Museum is located at the northernmost tip of the Fortress of Lappeenranta in a warehouse that was originally built as an artillery depot. The museum buildings are different from the neoclassical brick garrisons of the fortress, as they were constructed using local stone.

In the east hall of the South Karelia Museum, there is a permanent exhibition The Story of South Karelia, completed in 2025. The Story of South Karelia presents themes from the region’s prehistory to the present day. In the west hall, the museum showcases changing exhibitions covering various eras, themes and topical issues.

The collections of the South Karelia Museum contain artefacts and photographs from Lappeenranta, the South Karelia region and the Karelian Isthmus, the last of which was ceded to the Soviet Union in 1944.

The museum’s collections are regularly on display in exhibitions. In addition to exhibitions, the South Karelia Museum offers guided tours and hosts events and workshops.
