Educational institutions in Lappeenranta have a long tradition of genuine cooperation with local businesses, which ensures that the teaching focus is on working life. Educational institutions in the area are international by nature, due to long-standing trade and projects between Finland and Russia in South Eastern Finnish business life. These educational institutions have made a conscious decision to improve their expertise in the Russian language, culture, trade methods and research, turning them into a strength.
In addition to close contacts with Russia, they have international contacts with Europe and Asia. Today, local educational institutions are involved in student and teacher exchange programmes across the globe.
There are two upper secondary schools: Lyseo and Kimpinen Upper Secondary Schools. Kimpinen Upper Secondary School also offers upper secondary education for adults. There, adults can complete the entire upper secondary school syllabus or take individual courses in different subjects. It is also possible to take these courses through distance learning. The South Karelia IB World School also operates in Lappeenranta.
In addition, the city is home to a Steiner Waldorf School, which is maintained by an association, and the Finnish-Russian School of Eastern Finland, which is maintained by a foundation and has an emphasis on teaching the Russian language and culture.
