The programme of the 2017 Lappeenranta Ballet Gala addresses universal themes: love, life and death. As usual, the Ballet Gala will be arranged at the end of August at Lappeenranta City Theatre and is now being held for the eighth time.

Juhani Teräsvuori, Artistic Director of the Ballet Gala, promises powerful dance and music experiences for the audience:

“To sum up the programme, it includes both familiar and completely new elements. It will take viewers to the origins of love, life and death, but will also charm them with its virtuosity and brilliant coordination of dance and music.”

Ohad Naharin’s choreography Deca Dance, tailor-made for the Ballet Gala, is a new entity presenting the best elements of the choreographer virtuoso’s hit performances from over the years. Naharin’s choreographies were previously seen in Lappeenranta in 2010 and 2013.

Ohad Naharin is an award-winning, legendary Israeli choreographer, whose works have conquered the world. Juhani Teräsvuori views Naharin as one of the most inventive storytellers in the world of dance. His musical choices are ingenious, too. In Lappeenranta, his creation is interpreted by a group of 20 dancers from the Czech National Ballet.

“Deca Dance consists of moments in varying moods, in a powerful and breathtaking performance that guarantees excitement,” says Teräsvuori.

The final scene of a performance, Death and The Maiden, by another world-famous choreographer, Robert North, deals with life and death.

North has worked with a number of dance companies around the world. Death and The Maiden is one of his most touching works. The heart-rendering final scene will be seen at the Ballet Gala. At present, Robert is directing the ballet company Krefeld/Mönchengladbach in Germany, and the scene will be presented by its soloists Elisa Rossignoli, Victoria Hay and Alessandro Borghesani.

The principal dancer of Dresden’s Semperoper Ballet and the Hungarian National Ballet, István Simon from Hungary, will visit the Ballet Gala with his partner Svetlana Gileva. István has won awards in several ballet competitions, including gold medal in the Helsinki International Ballet Competition in 2005. Their poetic story sets the tale of Goethe’s young Werther to music by Chopin. The young stars of the Semperoper Ballet will also perform a classical repertoire.

Ballet Gala 2017 will be honoured to receive a visit from Kenneth Greve, who will begin his last season as the Director of the Finnish National Ballet.

“Greve will be seen on stage with his charming partner, Alina Nanu, the prima ballerina of the Czech National Ballet. They will dance a duet from the ballet Scheherazade, choreographed by Kenneth Greve,” says Teräsvuori.

The programme will be updated further during the spring.
